Apple calls it spatial computing, not the metaverse: the M5 Vision Pro, visionOS, accessibility built in from the start, and a founding role in the Alliance for OpenUSD.
Apple Prime
Apple avoids the term metaverse and positions Vision Pro within spatial computing, blending digital content with the physical world rather than replacing it. This fits Apple's ecosystem strategy: tight integration of hardware (Vision Pro), software (visionOS) and services (Apple TV+, Music, Fitness+, Arcade). Apple Intelligence reached Vision Pro in April 2025 with visionOS 2.4, reinforcing a premium, privacy-first position built on high-fidelity passthrough, intuitive eye, hand and voice control, and continuity across Apple devices.
Metaverse Products
- Apple Vision Pro (M5 refresh, October 2025): The upgraded Vision Pro adds the M5 chip, a more comfortable Dual Knit Band, modest battery gains and hardware acceleration for ray tracing and neural workloads. It remains the flagship for developers, creatives and enterprise users.
- visionOS: The first operating system designed for spatial computing, built on iOS and macOS foundations, with Shared Spaces, volumetric interfaces, realistic physics and environmental lighting through RealityKit and ARKit.
- Reality Composer Pro and ARKit: Reality Composer Pro, bundled with Xcode, authors complex 3D scenes with physics, spatial audio and USDZ workflows. ARKit remains the framework for plane detection, occlusion, scene reconstruction and tracking.
- Accessibility APIs: Accessibility is a first-class citizen in visionOS. Developers use familiar UIKit and SwiftUI accessibility APIs, VoiceOver works in 3D, and options such as alternative input and head-anchored content help immersive apps be inclusive from the start.
- Alliance for OpenUSD contributions: Apple is a founding member of AOUSD. Building on its early adoption of USDZ, it has embedded USD deeply in visionOS and Reality Composer Pro, and in the 2025 releases (including v25.11) its engineers contributed schema refinements so that USD supports spatial computing and 3D assets stay interoperable across industries.
Metaverse Applications
- The Infinite Desktop: Mac Virtual Display projects ultrawide or multi-monitor desktops into space alongside native visionOS apps, turning any location into a private, portable workstation.
- Spatial Memories: Spatial photos and videos captured on Vision Pro and iPhone 15 Pro or later replay at life-size scale with true depth.
- Immersive Entertainment: Apple Immersive Video delivers 180° 8K 3D content with spatial audio, including MLS Season Pass matches, concerts, short films and documentaries.
- Digital Twins and Enterprise Training: Deployments include KLM's "Engine Shop" app, Porsche's race-engineer and technician training, Siemens Energy, and medical and surgical visualization, where technicians work with real tools while digital instructions float in context.
Examples of Apple Product Enabled Use Cases
- Remote Work: A designer connects a MacBook to Vision Pro for a multi-monitor workspace in a small apartment.
- Family Preservation: Parents capture spatial videos of milestones on iPhone and relive them on Vision Pro.
- Immersive Sports Viewing: Fans watch MLS matches in 180° 8K 3D from goal-line perspectives.
- Enterprise Training: Porsche technicians overlay digital schematics on real engines, reducing training time and errors.
- Medical Visualization: Surgeons review 3D anatomical models during pre-operative planning.
- Accessibility: A blind user navigates immersive apps with VoiceOver, hearing descriptions of volumetric interfaces.
- Interoperable 3D Workflows: USD assets built in Reality Composer Pro move into other AOUSD-compliant tools.
