The best-funded AR pioneer of the last decade is leaving headsets to supply the waveguides inside other companies' AI display glasses. What shipped, what it supplies now, and the gap between promise and product.
Positioning: from spatial computing to component supplier
Founded in 2010 in Plantation, Florida, Magic Leap raised more than $4 billion from investors including Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), Google, Alibaba and Qualcomm, reaching a reported peak valuation of $6.4 billion in 2018 before the consumer pullback. PIF held 54.9% at the end of 2021 and added a $590 million convertible in 2023. Ross Rosenberg, formerly of Bain Capital, has been CEO since November 2023.
The pitch has shifted from "magic" headsets to optics that other manufacturers can ship.
Metaverse Products: headset lineage
- Magic Leap One (2018): The Creator Edition launched in August 2018 at $2,295, a consumer-aimed AR headset reported at about 6,000 units in its first six months.
- Magic Leap 2 (2022): Enterprise-only, launched 30 September 2022, with a 70° diagonal field of view and 1440×1760 per eye at 120 Hz. Priced at $3,299 Base, $4,099 Developer Pro and $4,999 Enterprise.
- Dynamic Dimming: Global and segmented dimming of the real world so digital content stays solid in bright settings, a first-to-market claim for Magic Leap 2.
- IEC 60601 certification: Announced at CES in January 2023, clearing Magic Leap 2 for operating rooms and clinical settings and opening a path to FDA-cleared surgical applications.
Metaverse Products: optics and ecosystem
- J-FIL waveguide manufacturing: Jet and Flash Imprint Lithography forms complex 3D grating structures in one step rather than multi-cycle 2D etching, pitched for yield and consistency.
- Google Android XR: A partnership since May 2024, extended for three years in October 2025. Reference glasses pair Magic Leap waveguides with Google's Raxium microLED light engine.
- Pegatron volume agreement: A January 2026 agreement pairs Magic Leap's waveguide and component expertise with Pegatron's volume manufacturing, targeting the reliability, yield and volume that commercial devices need.
Metaverse Applications
- Surgical and clinical AR: Early-access health partners for Magic Leap 2 included SentiAR, Brainlab, SyncThink and Heru, covering 3D cardiac mapping, surgical-plan review, balance-disorder trials and wearable diagnostics.
- Industrial enterprise AR: Magic Leap 2 positioned for manufacturing, architecture and construction, field service and defense, managed through standard enterprise device-management tools.
- AI display glasses supply: Since July 2026, waveguides and device-integration services for manufacturers building AI display glasses, including Google's Android XR reference design.
Product-Enabled Use Cases
- SentiAR cardiac navigation (January 2023): A hands-free 3D map of the heart with live catheter position on Magic Leap 2, so physicians stop looking away to a 2D screen. Under FDA review at announcement.
- Brainlab Mixed Reality Viewer (Magic Leap One and 2): Interdisciplinary teams create and review surgical plans together and share updates with patients.
- Google Android XR prototype (October 2025): A reference AI-glasses design shown at FII Riyadh, combining Magic Leap waveguides and Google Raxium microLED as a blueprint for other manufacturers.
- Pegatron waveguide ramp (January 2026): A manufacturing agreement to scale AR waveguide production for commercial devices using J-FIL.
Reality Check: the gap between promise and product
- About 600 of 1,900 employees were laid off in April 2020 after the consumer launch underperformed.
- 193 Florida jobs are cut effective 1 October 2026 (WARN filing) as Magic Leap exits first-party headsets.
- AI glasses are growing; headsets are not. Magic Leap cites IDC: global XR device shipments rose 44.4% in 2025, driven mainly by smart glasses. Meta also cut about 10% of Reality Labs staff in January 2026.
Magic Leap's bet is that the glasses era needs optics suppliers, not another headset.
